Sightings Blog - Late December 2021

Your wildlife sightings in Derbyshire in Late December 2021

We’d like to start this blog by wishing everyone the very best 2022 they can have and we hope that you get to have some amazing wildlife sightings in Derbyshire and maybe beyond.

Reported in South Derbyshire over the last two weeks is one of our successfully re-introduced birds, the red kite, to which the UK is now home to approximately 4600 breeding pairs. Also seen was an otter, one of our top predators they mainly feed on fish as well as waterbirds, amphibians and crustaceans. Further north in the Hope Valley the widespread greenfinch was recorded, although known for their green plumage, it is their yellow patches on their wings and tail that they show off during their mating displays.

As we continue into 2022 we look forward to reading about your wildlife sightings across Derbyshire. To submit your own sighting and be featured in a future blog go to www.derbyshirewildlifetrust.org.uk/wildlife/record-sighting.

Thank you to Dave Treacher, Tanya Spilsbury, Scott Walters and Michael Williams for submitting their wildlife sightings.
