Very quiet at present with few items of interest since the adult male Ruff at the end of last month. We have the lowest water levels since the 1990s with probably more than half the pools empty. Big Marsh is mainly dried mud apart from the southern end where the female Tufted still has her brood of 9 young in the ever shallower water that's left. Now 12 days old but appear to have grown very little. Lapwing numbers are still stable at c60, = down on the 90+ of June. 2 LRPs stayed for just the 15th, following a Green Sandpiper which did the same on 9th. Swifts & Hirrundines are still basically absent with an odd 1 or 2 on odd occasions'. The top bird of this month go's to a Whinchat on the 23rd, But this little beauty was an adult & more worryingly about 2 months early. Not a good sign of a bumper breeding season presumably the sun scorched vegetation isn't providing enough if any grubs & caterpillars to feed itself let alone any young.
