Fairly quiet on the reserve today in overcast conditions with a light-mod W wind. Great Crested Grebes seemed to breed late this year, so it was great to see 6 separate broods of up to 4 young at various stages of development. A single Green Sandpiper and 30 Lapwing were the only waders. Cetti’s warblers have started singing again with 5 heard along with late singing Chiff Chaff. Total counts were Little Grebe 2, Great Crested Grebe 33, Cormorant 30, Little Egret 1, Grey Heron 5, Mute Swan 21, Canada Goose 120, Gadwall 95, Teal 26, Mallard 100, Shoveler 15, Pochard 1, Tufted Duck 190, Moorhen 1, Coot 55, Lapwing 30, Green Sandpiper 1, Black-headed Gull 130 and Lesser Black-backed Gull 1. Speckled Wood was the only butterfly seen in numbers, with Green-veined White, Small Copper and Red Admiral also on the wing.
