At last a couple of migrant wader species to liven the mornings up. On 11th a flock of seven Black-tailed Godwits circled the reserve for ten minutes before heading of east and then on 12th a moulting adult male Ruff appeared briefly before it too departed east as soon as it was discovered. Both birds new for the year. Other bits and bobs recently include up to four Teal until 11th, a female Shoveler on 12th, the long-staying Common Snipe (still present on 12th), a first summer Common Gull on 12th and a singing Grasshopper Warbler (off the reserve) 10th-12th. However, although not on the reserve but within our greater recording area, a new species for our patch was discovered on 11th. A single Elm Tree just south of the reserve held at least two White Letter Hairstreaks and this prompted a wider search which resulted in two more small colonies with a total of six specimens being discovered on the eastern edge of our recording area. Just as exciting was the discovery in the same area of two colonies of Purple Hairstreaks, with a total of 14 being found. This is just the second record for the area following a female (that I missed) in 2013. Rounding off an excellent day for Butterflies was a count of 13 Holly Blues, the first double-figure count for the site.
