Weekend update from Carr Vale. To be fair not a bad weekend starting on Friday 7th when 99 Wigeon, 21 Gadwall, 131 Teal, Barn Owl, four Willow and the regular Marsh Tit and four Chiffchaffs on the embankment. An return visit in the evening netted five calling Water Rails but the Reed Bunting roost was poor with just 11 counted in, though perhaps I was a little late. On 8th 30 Pink-footed Geese flew east before I got there, Wigeon were up to 101, Gadwal to 23 but Teal were down to 69. An adult Common Gull was seen, 50+ Great Black-backed Gulls were present briefly before all the big gulls were spooked and left, the Marsh Tit was still present as were the four Chiffchaffs. A night shift meant that I missed the morning session when the guys had 330 Pink-footed Geese go east in two skeins. My afternoon visit was productive with two Water Rails calling, Barn Owl, a couple of Chiffchaffs and 49 Pied Wagtails out to roost. Best result though was confirming that two Cettiās Warblers are present, both calling at the same time along the northern edge of the reserve pool.
