Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s Erewash Meadows Nature Reserve is one of the most important wetland sites in Derbyshire and it is situated just outside of Jacksdale, near the Nottinghamshire boarder.  The former industrial area might seem like a questionable spot for flourishing wildlife, but it has become well known for its population of water voles, white-clawed crayfish and ample bird watching opportunities.  The reserve is split into three sections, Brinsley Meadows, the old Cromford Canal, and Aldercar Flash and Meadows.  Each area is home to a diverse collection of important native species, including breeding lapwings, skylarks and butterflies.

Thanks to funding from Cromford Canal and Codnor Park Reservoir group, the site is receiving two funded orientation panels to help the local community and visitors from further afield know why the site is so special, how they can use it and what wildlife they can expect to see.  Erewash Meadows transform from season to season, offering a constantly changing carousel of wildlife.  During the spring and autumn months, you can catch a glimpse of the migrating waders, hen harriers and wildfowl.  During the summer, the ponds and wet areas become the perfect home for grass snakes, dragonflies and amphibians.

Kate Lemon who is leading the project for Derbyshire Wildlife Trust said “We are very excited to get the new signage in on the reserve.  Being able to explain important aspects of the reserve to visitor is really useful in helping them build a relationship with the site and learn more about the local wildlife around them.”
