Biodiversity Net Gain

What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)?

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an approach to new development that aims to leave nature in a measurably better state than it was found.

Our approach is characterised by seeking the best, additional gains for nature, participation of local communities and desirable developments for people to live and work within.

We’re moving from protecting pockets of high-quality nature reserves to the protection and creation of whole landscapes that are ecologically sound and resilient, and allow nature to flourish.

It's now mandated that all developments which are approved under the Town and Country Planning Act leave nature in a better state than before the development, these projects will need to achieve at least 10% biodiversity net gain (BNG) in order to gain planning permission.
