Defra’s Bovine TB Strategy Refresh – our call for an end to the badger cull and focus on cattle measures

Last Autumn, the Government announced its strategy to use a scientific approach to end the badger cull and accelerate the development of a cattle vaccine. Now, work has begun to refresh the strategy, with an independent panel of experts convening to consider any new evidence that might affect the conclusions of their previous report in 2018.

We are pleased to hear that the Government has commissioned this independent expert assessment and understand that this is an important opportunity to assess new findings around both the inefficacy of culling and the success of cattle measures, whilst addressing some of the gaps in the last review.

Despite this being an encouraging step forward, the Government’s strategy is not urgent enough. We are continuing to meet with Defra regularly to ensure that they deliver on the Government’s commitment to end the badger cull. We once again call upon the UK Government to end the badger cull, accelerate the development of a cattle vaccine and improve cattle biosecurity.
