Spring and summer for woodland flowers

About the reserve

This area of majestic ancient ash woodland above the River Wye is in the beautiful Wye Valley.

Ash and yew trees clinging to the steep daleside slopes provide shelter for a variety of woodland flowers in spring and summer, including lily of the valley and sanicle.

The nationally rare bird’s foot sedge and the delicate mountain melick grass are also found here.

The upper slopes with a deeper soil provide a suitable habitat for sheets of bluebell – these are best seen from the road running above the reserve.
